Well, the first three barrels have anyway. And they look fantastic. You don't believe us? Go to Katoomba Street and have a look OR follow this link to photos of today's grand opening. We understand there were a few problems with the bolts but when the head of the Chamber is an ex-industrial arts teacher and a builder such problems don't last long. Congratulations to all involved (and special thanks to Sue Bell and Matthew Brewster of Council for their contribution).
We will soon be rolling out the barrels. However, first we had to paint them. Anne Elliott and her team (made up of Katoomba Chamber members) spent Saturday 13th October preparing them for their Katoomba Street unveiling.
The barrels will be up and down Katoomba Street full of beautiful flowers. It is our Spring gift to Katoomba. See images from the big barrel painthere (at bottom) and here.
The National Parks Discovery Programme presents a wonderful opportunity to deepen your understanding of the Blue Mountains, its history and its poetry. We recently attended a walk that started from Echo Point and that was conducted by Chris Tobin of National Parks. The event was a pure delight and the walking party, made up of many young people under 10 years of age, were told stories that will live with them long after the event.
Niche Nosh Cafe will be the venue for a wonderful new exhibition of local Aboriginal art. The show runs from October to December 2007 and is put together by the Marra Aboriginal Art Mob Blue Mountains. The cafe is 55-57 Katoomba St Katoomba. For more information contact Kate Hardman on 0400 454 390 or Tracey Allen 0416 628 908. Also see Marra Mob Official website here.
The Rural FIre Service must be congratulated on their recent open day held at the Katoomba Headquarters. They have certainly recruited some future firies from 3 to 12 year olds that attended the event. Kids were given the opportunity to dress as brigade members, ride the truck and blare the siren. There was also a fascinating display of firefighting.
Plans to turn the Railway Goods Yard at Katoomba Station into a car park date back to at least 1994 and possibly even before that. In 1994, the Department of Transport rejected the site for parking on the basis of the difficult egress and access to the site. The yard's irregular shape also added to the Department's reasons for rejection of the Council proposal. Since then numerous plans have been proposed. Some hideously inappropriate some visionary and some a compromise. This article discusses past and present events to provide a little perspective to any contemporary discussion.
