The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.

Community Bank Target Gets Closer
It has taken a great deal of dedicated work, much it from President Robert Stock, involving weekly meetings and Saturday street stalls but we are drawing close to the magic figure of $650,000. We only require another $100,000 in pledges to move to the next phase which involves the development of a feasibility study.
If you have been thinking about getting involved, now is the time to act. Should you want to know more about the benefits of a community bank or the steps required to achieve one, you'll find much of what you need to know here. You can also check our progress week to week.
Winter Magic Public Meeting Monday
Please join this year's Winter Magic Committee this Monday 5th May at 7:30pm in the Carrington Library for a key meeting leading up to the Winter Magic Festival on June 21. A Satellite Events programme is also planned starting June 14 and running to 28 June.
This is Katoomba's big event and the committee would greatly appreciate stronger participation from local business. They are aware that Katoomba businesses are constantly being asked to support worthy causes but this one is different. Winter Magic brings 40,000 to Katoomba's Town Centre. The Committee hopes to hear from the local businesses for which Winter Magic weekend is their biggest trading day of the year. Find out more about Winter Magic 2008.
Gas Heater Health Risk in Our Schools
A new community group has been formed to highlight and address respiratory and related health problems caused by unflued gas heaters in mountain schools. Drawing on parents and concerned citizens from across the mountains, COUGH (Campaign Opposed to Unflued Gas Heaters) has already had extensive discussions with the NSW Government.
To date, the response from NSW Minister for Education, John Della Bosca, has been less than encouraging. These heaters have been banned across much of the world and in most states of Australia. NSW' response has lagged behind the science. Meetings will be held across the mountains to progress the COUGH campaign. See report on dangers here.
How many people remember when Katoomba and Echo Point were the focal point for major planning initiatives back in 1998. Maybe you were at the Katoomba RSL on the night that the consultants, Ecologically Sustainable Design, presented their findings to an exultant crowd?
A central feature of the Charrette was that it was a plan for the whole town as opposed ad hoc, knee jerk, quick fixes that had characterised urban design in Katoomba. The NSW Government recognised at the time that a town of such tourism significance needed better treatment.
Another key feature was that the final plan was built around publicly owned sites. These key sites, for the most part, sit today much as they were prior to the Charrette. Once more we need a plan, whether it be for parking or anything else, that is part of a vision for the town.
We have added an interactive map to the website that provides details on local restaurants, bookshops, what's on information, bus and train information plus links to a range of key sites. Want to have a look?
