Katoomba Garden Club News:
The Katoomba Street Garden Group are now working with the Council through horticulturist Mark Vickers and community relations manager Dan Long. Council is supplying most garden products and plants.
The barrels have been planted with pansies and some shopkeepers and St Hilda’s congregation are helping with watering and general care. Two barrels down the bottom that were targeted by vandals have been removed and will be replanted and grown on before being placed further up in better lit areas.
A few street beds such as the ones outside Studleigh place and near Pryor place have been planted with ground-covers, pansies (replacing petunias) and geraniums.
For Winter Magic, the Garden group installed bunting and signs held by dolls and teddies amongst the newly planted beds and barrels. This proved very successful in persuading festival-goers not to trample the plants.
Planting work will begin in earnest in spring. Mark Vickers is overseeing the removal of most of the Liriopes (long grasses) in the street beds to make room for low shrubs and border flowers.
The KCCC garden group will map the street beds this month and produce a draft planting plan by early September for focal beds, including those leading onto the bottom roundabout, the triangular bed outside Thomsons shoeshop and beds at crossings.
The aim is to have colourful and varied foliage in the lemon-lime to dark green range with year round flowering colour.
Locals of all ages and genders have been extremely appreciative of the efforts to date, with many people stopping to thank and complement the volunteer workers. The trials and tribulations with a handful of thieves and vandals along with the difficulty maintaining consistent watering – neither too much nor too little – will form part of the Garden Group’s August review and planning for spring.
